I hope I am not the only one who can't believe how fast this year is going! We have already moved past Valentine's Day and are currently enjoying a day off to remember the great presidents who have served our country. Students are flying through their academics and it is wonderful to see all of the progress that has been made. I am excited for the upcoming events that are going to occur the rest of the year as well as to see how much the students grow in the next few months. Even though February is almost over there is still a lot to do.
The first few months of school have already passed and we are blessed to be in this new year. During the first day back, the students learned about new incentives there are in order to make sure that everyone is allowed the best learning experience. Students are working to make good choices throughout the day in order to learn as much as they can. Students jumped back into reading and math and began their time back in P.E. I am excited to see how this half of the year plays out and I hope all students are ready to do the same.
Today marks the end of the first half of first grade and I cannot believe how fast it has flown. I have seen all of the students grow so much in such a short period of time and it is exciting to see the changes. The week before Christmas break is always so much fun. We spent a lot of time focused on preparing for Christmas, but we also made sure to have a lot of fun too. We made gingerbread houses with our 6th grade Angels, participated in the sing-along, watched a play, and even received letters from Santa. I sure hope that the students feel as proud of their work as I do. I am excited to see what the rest of 1st grade has to offer! For now we rest our minds and bodies before coming back to school in the new year.
We are already on the third day of November and time is flying by. This week we celebrated All Saints Day by going to Mass and the students shared what they learned about their saints. The class studied about their saint with their 6th grade Angels and created crowns to wear. We have also started our study of subtraction as well as what is means to be President and how the President is elected. Students will have the opportunity to vote on Election Day in Mr. Schild's classroom. We are continuously working on being kind and making the best choices to help our learning.
I hope all families were able to enjoy MEA break and it was nice to see the smiling faces of the students on Monday. This week we have been focusing on keeping our school and classroom "Bully Free". Throughout the week we discussed respect, empathy, integrity, and peace. Tomorrow we will wrap up our discussion with inclusion. Even though the spirit week is ending, we are going to strive to keep our room bully free. We want to continue to use kind words throughout all of our lives.
First grade has been working so hard to begin mastering the concepts that they are being taught. We have moved on into addition which is a huge topic for the 1st graders. We are always working hard to learn new things. We have started a study on bats which are magnificent creatures. We read the story of Stellaluna, who is a bat that learns what the difference between a bat and a bird. Students stated that story is one of their favorites, so it was fun to see them listen to reading. Since this week is so short, students will be completing an art project today about another nocturnal animal, the owl. I am so excited to see where we go next! New pictures have been added to our site, so check them out!
The first graders have been working very hard this year and I have seen lots of growth. One of the biggest changes coming soon is that students are going to begin learning about addition. So far in math, students have been spending time on numbers and number sense and this will benefit their ability to add. We have also added a new face to our class for the last three weeks. We are extremely lucky to have these students in our class because it allows students to learn about new people and make new friends. I am excited to begin different aspects of learning such as implementing Daily 5 in my reading class which seems to be going well as well as to begin more student centered learning in Math. Change is inevitable and your students are adapting well!
It is crazy to think that the end of our first month of school is coming soon. Students have been working so hard to get back into the school mindset and have done their best learning the new routines. Today we were able to enjoy the Makerspace and it was very cool to see students trying to create something out of Legos and Duct Tape. I have learned that I am going to try and have students work outside of their comfort zone to see what they can accomplish.
Today students continued their study of the short "i" sound as well as practiced their spelling words. We had Mass today since the Middle school will be gone tomorrow for a Mass at CHS field. Students are spending lots of time learning how to work together kindly. I was very impressed with their abilities to share as a group what law they illustrated in social studies. Students spoke eloquently and knew exactly what was expected, they blew me away!
Our Tuesday was a busy one with some new additions and changes to our daily routine. I was happy that students were able to adjust to these changes. We are currently in the middle of testing for reading, so today both 1st grade classrooms joined for reading class. We have been working with words with the short "i" sound, so we played short "i" bingo and students did a great job. We spent time reading with partners and practicing our spelling words. The rest of the day was more of our normal schedule and in social studies, students learned about laws in their community. First grade learning is starting to pick up and students are doing a good job staying on task.
