About Nativity's Band Program
We perform at two major concerts during the year: the Christmas Concert in December, and the Spring Band Concert in May. The 6/7/8 grade bands will also perform at Mass once a month. Other performances we have done in past years include a Veteran's Day tribute in November, Grandparent's Day Concert in October, Kindergarten mini-concert in May, and a Catholic Schools Week pep-rally in January.
Nativity requires all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to choose either band, choir, or bells for their music class. Those who wish to play in band must start in 5th grade.
Fifth Grade Band
In fifth grade band, students learn how to read music and play their instrument. We focus on playing together as a group and developing a good sound and consistent practice habits. Students begin studying their instrument in four private lessons the summer before fifth grade.
Sixth Grade Band
Students continue to learn new notes and techniques on their instruments in sixth grade band. We focus on learning music with more independent parts, and also solidifying our understanding of the basic elements of music. The sixth grade band will perform with the seventh and eighth grade band occasionally.
Seventh and Eighth Grade Band
The seventh and eighth grade band rehearses together and performs together. We focus on learning new repertoire and improving our collective sound. We learn new scales and more complex rhythms. Each 7th and 8th grader prepares a solo piece or duet to be performed at the spring recital in May.
Below is the Band Newsletter that was sent home in December:
