Learning Support
Nativity of Mary Catholic School offers a Learning Resource Center to support and enrich student learning. From small group time to one-on-one learning, students benefit from the nurturing environment in the Learning Resource Center. Our staff are trained in the Orton Gillingham method which supports students in reading through a more tactile approach. Our center can support students with dyslexia, ADHD, autism spectrum, and other learning needs. In addition, many of our teachers and staff offer tutoring before or after school.
Meet Mrs. Thornton
Elementary Interventionist - Bloomington School District #271
I am thrilled to be serving the students and families at Nativity as the Learning Specialist! I went to Nativity of Mary from Kindergarten through 8th grade and then on to Holy Angels. I received my bachelor’s degree in education from Saint Mary’s University in Winona and continued a few years later to receive my Master’s degree in Literacy Education. I am a K-12 reading specialist and have my own tutoring business. I spent six years working at Cannon River STEM School in Faribault, Minnesota where I taught 4th grade, wrote curriculum, and helped develop their STEM program in connection with literacy. I also taught second grade at Nativity of Our Lord in St. Paul where I was privileged to lead the students through two beautiful sacraments. I am trained in Responsive Classroom and Orton-Gillingham Levels 1 and 2. I hope to help your child celebrate his or her strengths while finding engaging ways to tackle the challenges of learning to build success and confidence. I look forward to meeting you!
